4 Reasons To Enroll Your Child In Gymnastics

4 Reasons to Enroll Your Child in Gymnastics

Gymnastics programs are hugely beneficial to developing athletes. We tend to associate the sport with elite gymnasts performing gravity-defying acrobatics on TV. And while children do learn impressive new skills in class, the advantages of gymnastics participation extend far beyond aquiring greater physical agility and coordination. Let's explore some of the top reasons to enroll your child in gymnastics lessons today.

1. Social Emotional Learning

Gymnastics provides many opportunities for Social Emotional Learning: (SEL), a form of knowledge acquisition that includes emotional control as well as effective communication. These formative skills support kids' educational and later professional successes. Observe one gymnastics lesson and you will see many SEL opportunities in action.

Children learn to communicate their impressions of new challenges to their coaches, for example, as well as how to celebrate their teammates' achievements. These SEL scenarios are often different than those encountered in formal educational settings. As a result, gymnastics enhances children's ongoing growth and development.

2. Goal Setting

Gymnastics teaches kids how to break down larger goals into smaller ones. The sport also shows gymnasts that persistence and effort can result in impressive and even unexpected personal feats.

What's more, the process of acquiring new gymnastics skills encourages students to be both self-reflective and self-disciplined. These insights can be readily applied to the goals that children establish for themselves outside of the gym.

3. Self-Esteem

Gymnastics helps children develop greater self-esteem, or positive views of one's self. When kids are presented with reasonably challenging activities in a fun environment, they feel motivated to try their best to accomplish the tasks at hand.

A child's achievements in these motivating settings have the effect of helping them develop greater self-efficacy, which can be defined as the belief in their own capacity to find success in situations. It may not look like tremendous developmental progress is being made when a young gymnast crosses a balance beam one small step at a time. Yet, a closer look reveals that this achievement is effectively an incremental stride toward lifelong, healthy self-esteem.

4. Social Skills

Gymnastics provides kids with fun opportunities to connect with their peers. For our Base Camp Toddlers, gymnastics class may be one of their first experiences interacting with peers in a class environment. For other students, such as gymnasts in our Advanced Program, class can be a space for athletes to make new friends with shared interests.

Positive interactions with peers provide more than a shared space to learn somersaults and cartwheels; rather, these opportunities provide an avenue for ongoing connectedness and lifelong well-being.
